How the Amazon Vine program works
The Amazon Vine program is Amazon’s first-party review-seeding program. You enroll a parent ASIN, select a tier, and Amazon offers free units of your product to Vine Voices, a curated pool of reviewers with a track record of writing detailed, helpful reviews. Those reviewers receive your product at no cost, use it, and post a review tagged with the green “Vine Customer Review of Free Product” badge.
You cannot influence the review content. Amazon Vine program reviews can be 1-star or 5-star. Amazon enforces this strictly: any attempt to contact Vine Voices about their review violates the Terms of Service and can result in account suspension. The program exists to generate authentic, early reviews that help shoppers make informed purchase decisions on products that lack review history.
The Amazon Vine program is available only to sellers enrolled in Brand Registry. The product must have fewer than 30 reviews at the time of enrollment, and you must have FBA inventory available for Amazon to ship to reviewers. Many sellers pair Vine with A+ Content to maximize conversion on newly launched products.
Vine fee tiers and per-review cost math
| Tier | Enrollment fee | Max units | Max reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 2 | 2 |
| Basic | $75 | 10 | 10 |
| Full | $200 | 30 | 30 |
The enrollment fee is only charged seven days after the first Vine review is published. If no review appears within 90 days, you pay nothing. But you still lose the product units, so the real cost per review is the enrollment fee plus your landed COGS per unit.
Per-review cost formula:
Example: launching a $42 kitchen product
A seller launching a kitchen gadget at $42 ASP with a $9 landed COGS enrolls in the Full tier to get up to 30 reviews fast.
Vine cost breakdown:
- Enrollment fee: $200
- Product cost: 30 units x $9 landed = $270
- FBA pick/pack fees on free units: ~$4.50 x 30 = $135 (Amazon still charges FBA fulfillment fees for Vine shipments)
- Total investment: $605
Assume 24 of 30 Vine Voices leave a review (80% review rate is typical). Cost per review: $605 / 24 = $25.21 per review.
Compare that to organic review velocity. A new product selling 8 units/day with a 1% to 2% organic review rate earns roughly 2.4 to 4.8 reviews per month. Reaching 24 reviews organically would take 5 to 10 months. Vine compresses that to 30 to 60 days, meaning the product hits the credibility threshold (15+ reviews) where conversion rates stabilize roughly 4 to 8 months sooner.
At 8 units/day and a $15 contribution margin, each month of delay costs roughly $3,600 in foregone profit. Getting reviews 4 months earlier is worth approximately $14,400 in accelerated contribution margin, against a $605 Vine investment.
Common mistakes
- Enrolling a product that is not launch-ready. Vine reviews are permanent. If your listing images are bad, your packaging is flawed, or the product has a defect, you will collect negative reviews that you cannot remove. Fix the product first, then enroll.
- Ignoring the product cost in ROI calculations. Sellers focus on the $200 enrollment fee and forget that they are also giving away 30 units at landed cost. For a product with $25 COGS, the real cost is $200 + $750 = $950, not $200.
- Enrolling SKUs that already sell well organically. Vine is for products with fewer than 30 reviews that need a credibility boost. If a SKU is already converting and generating organic reviews at a healthy rate, the Vine investment adds minimal incremental value.
